What Do You Have in Your Hand?

The word of the Lord came this morning, asking what do you have in your hand. It takes what you have in your hand to bless you, help you, uplift you, or also to drown you.

Let’s flip our Bible to two notable instances of where “what do you have” applied and how these people were blessed with what they had at hand.

Let’s look at the first Bible verse: Exodus 4:1-4

“Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you?” Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied. The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it. Then the Lord said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand.

We know what really happened in the Court of Pharaoh, the King of Egypt when Moses demanded his people be released so that they can go and worship their God. And the staff in the hand of Moses played a significant role in his “revolution” against the status quo.

Let’s look at the second Bible verse: 2 Kings 4:7

A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.”

So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.”

Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.”

The two verses have something to do with blessings with what they have at hand. You shall be blessed by what you have, not what don’t have.

This morning, my question to you is what do you have at hand?

This question goes beyond material items on hand. What skills do you have, what talent do you have, what knowledge do you have, what abilities do you have? What you have becomes the platform for God to use to launch you into your destiny provisions.

I have seen many men and women who lament and even cursed themselves that they don’t have anything, they are so poor, they are so deprived, God didn’t create them well or God has been unfair to them. Yet these so-called deprived beings carry within them enormous blessings that they have ignored, but rather looking into other people’s pots of blessings.

Like the parable of the talents (Matthew 25: 14-30), many have buried their abilities and are not able to unearth their God-given blessings. They have not awakened to the occasions like the foolish virgins (Matthew 25:1-4).

Since the foundation of this Creation, equal abilities were offered to all human spirits by God. Along the line, the few utilized their talents very well and the rest buried their talents. This brought the sharp divide between the “have’s” and the “have-nots”, or the so-called developed world and the developing world or the rich and the poor people.

If Samson could kill thousands of Philistines with just the jawbone of a donkey (Judges 15:16), then whatever you have at hand is your tool and also your weapon for your journey in creation.

Today, I would like to exhort you to utilize whatever you have, be it your voice, your head, your hand, your heart, your legs, in the disposition of honouring God. In other words, your voice could sing, become a radio presenter, preach or lead, your head could be for academic or professional purposes, your hand could be your skills/ability to make things great with your hand, your heart for your passion for things you do, your legs are the steps that you take towards your goal or even for people into sports.

The members of your physical body are already a great source of what you have. You don’t need money to make it in life; you only need the gift of life. You must develop a keen interest and un-diverted passion for whatever you have ahead of you.

See to it that you utilize whatever God has for you diligently. There your blessings lie.
